Built in 1885 on a natural hollow north of downtown Nashville, Sulphur Dell was unlike any ballpark in America. The outfield did not lay flat the way every other ballpark in America laid flat. It rose. Sharply. Dramatically. At a grade so steep that outfielders ran uphill to catch fly balls and turned to throw back downhill toward home plate like they were coming off a mountain trail.

Nobody designed it that way. The land was simply what it was. And Nashville played ball on it anyway for 78 years.

Sportswriters from across the country made the trip to Nashville just to see it for themselves. They left calling it the same thing every time — the most peculiar ballpark in America. Nashville called it home. From 1885 until its final game in 1963 Sulphur Dell was one of the most unique pieces of sporting ground this country has ever produced — unrepeatable, impractical, and completely unforgettable.

It was demolished in 1969. The hollow is gone. The legend is not.
