In 1625, Dutch settlers established New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan — a small trading post on a river island at the edge of the known world that had absolutely no idea it was about to become the greatest city in the history of human civilization. They built it from timber, and trade, and the particular Dutch stubbornness that does not stop to ask whether the timing is right before it builds something permanent.
They called it New Amsterdam. They painted it in the colors of the Dutch House of Nassau — blue, white, and orange. They put down roots so deep that when the British arrived in 1664 and renamed the city New York, they could change the name, but they could not change the colors. The orange stayed. The blue stayed. The white stayed.
Four hundred years later those same Dutch colonial colors are still flying over New York City every single day. Most New Yorkers walk past the flag without knowing they are looking at 1625. Without knowing the orange is not a design choice. It is history. It is the color of a Dutch royal house carried forward four centuries from New Amsterdam to the most recognizable skyline on earth.
