The Unisphere rose out of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in 1964 for the World's Fair — 140 feet of stainless steel representing every continent on earth, gifted to New York City as a symbol of peace through human achievement. Three rings circle its surface representing the orbital paths of the first American astronaut, the first Soviet cosmonaut, and the first communications satellite — proof that even at the height of the Cold War humanity still found moments worth celebrating together.
But to Queens the Unisphere means something more personal than history. Every person who arrived in this borough from another country, another language, another life — arrived in a place that already had a monument in its park declaring that the whole world was welcome here. Not just tolerated. Celebrated.
