Some buildings just stand there. The Old Talbott Tavern has been making history since before America was a country.

In 1779 — three years after the Declaration of Independence was signed and while the Revolutionary War was still being fought — a tavern opened on Court Square in Bardstown, Kentucky that has never once closed its doors. Not for wars. Not for epidemics. Not for the economic collapses, and the upheavals, and the relentless forward march of time that claimed nearly everything else built in the same era. The Old Talbott Tavern simply endured the way all genuinely extraordinary things endure — by being so completely and so permanently itself that the world kept finding reasons to walk through its doors.

And what walked through those doors over the next two and a half centuries reads like a who's who of American history.

King Louis Philippe of France stayed at the Talbot Tavern while living in American exile before his ascension to the throne. Jesse James stayed there, too, and left bullet holes in the murals that are still visible in the walls today. The tavern survived the Civil War, Prohibition, and every chapter of American history that unfolded in the two and a half centuries since 1779, without ever once calling it a night.

There is a particular kind of institution that a building becomes when it has been doing one thing exceptionally well for long enough. Not just a bar. Not just a landmark. Something more essential — a gathering place so woven into the fabric of a community that the community cannot imagine itself without it. The Old Talbott Tavern is that building for Bardstown. Has been since 1779.

An old-fashioned good time. Since before old-fashioned was a cocktail.

This shirt is for everyone who has pulled up a barstool at the Old Talbott Tavern and understood immediately that they were sitting somewhere that mattered — and for everyone who has not yet had the pleasure and needs a reason to go.
